Purchasing a ready-made drink in Alberta comes with a charge for the container it comes in called a deposit. The money is held in trust by the company that made the container and is returned to you, the consumer, when you bring the empty container back to the bottle depot. Calgary bottle depots collect the containers from you, give you the deposit amount back as a refund and then move the containers along in the process towards becoming reusable or made into recycled materials for various industries. The bottle depot return program has been simplified so that there are only two rates that can be collected as a deposit.
